Ansvar Insurance Limited (Ansvar) is an insurance company with a difference. We opened our doors in 1961 with a desire to provide the best insurance we could. Owned by a charity, we are an ethical insurer committed to our community with all available profits going to charitable causes. Ansvar is dedicated to creating long-term partnerships, providing bespoke solutions and offering excellent customer service. In 1994, it made sense for us to establish our own charitable program, the Community Education Program. Ansvar gives up to 10% of annual profits to fund programs aimed at helping disadvantaged, Australian youths. Through our grants program, Ansvar has donated in excess of $10 million to the community.

Company Staff

Craig Love
In 2012, Craig brought to Ansvar more than 23 years of experience in the General Insurance industry. Over the last five years Craig has been heavily involved in Property underwriting in particular, the Industrial Special Risks policy. Craig has held previous positions with CGU, Suncorp, Elders and Allianz. Mentoring and training younger staff has been a significant part of Craig’s career to date. In Craig’s role at Ansvar as Property Underwriting Manager, he has played a pivotal role in the development of policy wordings, underwriting procedures, facultative reinsurance placements and training of staff to help them identify and produce tailored Property insurance solutions for customers within Ansvar’s core sectors.
Darren Fennessy
Bringing more than 16 years’ of underwriting experience to the company, Darren provides in-depth underwriting support to stakeholders, clients and his colleagues. Darren has held several senior management positions prior to joining Ansvar including Australian Liability Manager at Arch Insurance, Senior Leader Casualty at Suncorp, National Manager Liability Vero Corporate & National Liability Underwriter at SRS Underwriting Agency. In his position as a Casualty Portfolio Manager at Ansvar, Darren is a valued team member responsible for providing technical underwriting support to all relevant stakeholders as well as aligning risk and compliance management to practices within the Casualty portfolio.
David Davies
David is a qualified Actuary with over 25 years of general insurance experience. He has worked in a variety of roles in insurance and as a consultant for corporate and banking organisations. As Chief Actuary of the Ecclesiastical Group in the UK for 5 years prior to joining Ansvar, David has a key insight into the progress that Ansvar Insurance has made in recent years, in particular, he has seen significant improvements in the areas of pricing, data quality, claims analysis and risk management.
Kerry Thom
Kerry joined Ansvar in 2014 in the role of Financial Lines Portfolio Manager. Kerry has responsibility for Ansvar’s Financial Lines portfolio of business nationally including underwriting of large, complex cases and schemes. The role makes excellent use of Kerry’s years of experience including his most recent time spent with Allianz where he was responsible for the Commercial Financial Lines portfolio for the Southern Region of Australia. Prior to that Kerry experience spans six years at Vero Profin as Senior Underwriter for Professional and Financial Risks, three years at CGU, and five years with ANZ Bank.
Mathew Holland
Matt joined Ansvar Insurance in 2013, bringing risk management and loss prevention knowledge gained during his more than 20 years of experience in the insurance industry across all major client facing areas. Matt has previously held roles at State Insurance in Business Development, Account Management and Claims. It was at State Insurance that he realised his passion for loss prevention, risk management and innovation when he became a Risk Surveyor in 2001. Subsequent roles have been with IAG and Lumley. During Matt's career he has been instrumental in the development, leadership and training for initiatives that drive the use of digital and hand held device technology for the capture and use of information. Following the devastating earthquakes that struck Matt's city of Christchurch in 2010 he was heavily involved in Lumley’s initial response to the disaster. Following his personal experiences with people and a desire to assist his fellow Cantabrians, he left Lumley and moved to Mainland Claims Management, a Christchurch based loss adjusting firm. Here he lead of team of loss adjusters and support staff in managing the earthquake claims of the high value and complex engineering problems associated with Christchurch’s ‘hillside properties. Additional experience was gained during his time with EQC, where he assessed, costed and developed remediation strategies for the large and varying types of land damage the earthquake caused. In Matt’s role at Ansvar as Customer Risk Solutions Advisor, he continues to play an intrinsic role in developing and raising the profile of risk management with NSW’s customers and the creation of digital risk management platforms and solutions for his team.
Phil Gare
Phil has over 25 years of experience in the insurance industry in both Australia and New Zealand and has worked with both Insurers and Insurance Broking organisations. Phil has led large and expert teams within many Insurance functions including Claims, Reinsurance, Pricing, HR and Strategy during his career. Prior to joining Ansvar Phil led OAMPS National Claims team. Currently he leads Ansvar’s national claims team in delivering outstanding claims responses to brokers and customers.
Phillip Salter
Phillip joined Ansvar in 2008 and has over 25 years of experience in the Insurance industry in customer service, underwriting, broking, sales, post-claims work and surveying. His experience spans Ansvar’s core sectors of Faith, Care, Community, Education and Heritage. During Phillip’s career he has held roles with Catholic Church Insurances and with the Public Healthcare Program of the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority, gaining risk management experience with hospitals and care facilities. Phillip’s specific expertise across Ansvar’s core segments in the area of risk management helps Ansvar customers identify and mitigate risks that other insurers may not be aware of. He also helps customers arrive at a fair and sensible sum insured for buildings on their insurance program.
Richard Wyatt
Richard joined Ansvar in 2011 as General Manager - Underwriting with over 35 years of experience as a Chartered Insurer underwriting all classes of General Insurance. Much of Richard’s career has been in the UK where he held senior underwriting positions with Eagle Star and Zurich. He also has experience on the property committee of the ABI (Association of British Insurers) and the Crime Panel where he represented the UK Insurance market on Crime issues at the CEA (Comité European d’Assurance). In 2002 Richard joined the Ecclesiastical Insurance Group in the role of International Underwriting Manager before taking on the responsibility of managing their UK Property account in 2006. Richard has a passion for pricing and a proven track record of steering accounts through troubled waters.
Sue Kennedy
With more than 20 years of Insurance industry experience, Sue joined Ansvar in 2011 in the role of Casualty Underwriting Manager. Her overall responsibility is to ensure Ansvar’s Casualty book of business is well underwritten and runs profitably. As a valued member of the underwriting management team, Sue is involved in driving and delivering strategy. Sue started her Insurance career working for a brokerage holding roles with OAMPS and Marsh. Following this Sue joined Australian International Insurance Limited (AIIL) which was the former underwriting agency of OAMPS, where she held her first underwriting role; Senior Liability Underwriter, for 7 years. Sue’s broking experience has provided her with the extremely important ability of seeing issues from a client’s perspective to then adapt a flexible approach to underwriting tailoring policies to suit individual client needs where possible. Across Ansvar’s core sectors, Sue has personal experience in both Childcare and Aged Care – having had both young children in care and a loved one in palliative care. Through her experience Sue understands the risks associated with providing care and the sensitivities required around ensuring family members are happy with the care provided.
Warren Hutcheon
Warren joined Ansvar as the CEO in May 2014 and is also an Executive Director on the Ansvar Australian Board. Immediately prior to joining Ansvar he was the CEO of the Victorian Managed Insurance Authority, the risk and insurance advisor to the Victorian Government, where he was responsible for a successful and high profile cultural and performance turnaround. With over 30 years’ experience in risk and insurance, Warren has held senior positions in underwriting, claims, operational management, strategy and organisational change. Warren has been active in supporting the Australian insurance industry for many years, and is currently Chair of the ANZIIF General Insurance Faculty Advisory Board. He is also on the Board of the Victorian Building Authority and Chair of their Audit and Risk Committee. Warren is actively involved in the community as a Board member of Bayside Church Inc, Bayside Community Care and other associated entities.
