The Association of British Insurers is the leading trade association for insurers and providers of long term savings. Our 250 members include most household names and specialist providers who contribute £12bn in taxes and manage investments of £1.6trillion. The ABI’s role is to: • Be the voice of the UK insurance industry, leading debate and speaking up for insurers. • Represent the UK insurance industry to government, regulators and policy makers in the UK, EU and internationally, driving effective public policy and regulation. • Advocate high standards of customer service within the industry and provide useful information to the public about insurance. • Promote the benefits of insurance to the government, regulators, policy makers and the public.
He has over 25 years of operational and executive experience in the insurance industry across life assurance and general insurance, both in the UK and overseas. At Friends Life he led the transformation of the three acquired businesses and brings his strategic and business skills, experience of organisational change and knowledge of the Friends Life business to the board.
Director of Regulation
Hugh Savill is Director of Regulation at the ABI, with accountability for relations between the insurance industry and the Bank of England on prudential regulation, for relations with the Financial Conduct Authority on conduct regulation, and also for taxation issues affecting insurers. He sits on the Executive Committee of the ABI, and reports through the Prudential, Finance and Tax Committee to the ABI Board. At the ABI Hugh has held a number of Assistant Director roles, covering EU and international affairs, UK public affairs, and ABI member relations and events. He was temporary Director of Investment Affairs for 18 months before moving into his current role in 2012.
Huw Evans is Director General of the Association of British Insurers, having taken up the position on 1 February 2015. He was previously Deputy Director General and Policy Director, having joined the ABI as Operations Director in 2008. Huw was at the heart of the industry's preparations for the Government's pension reforms and led the ABI's work on the negotiations with the Government on the future of flood insurance. He is the author of the ABI’s future policy blueprint ‘Identifying the Challenges of a Changing World', is committed to developing the role of healthy insurance and long-term savings markets that meet the future needs of customers and the economy, as well as championing better diversity in the industry.
Director, General Insurance Policy
James Dalton is Director of General Insurance Policy at the ABI. James has responsibility for leading the ABI’s work on property, liability, health and motor insurance issues, including flooding policy, civil justice reform, tackling insurance fraud and the issues associated with legacy claims. James was previously the ABI’s Assistant Director, Head of Motor and Liability. Prior to joining the ABI in 2007, James was a Senior Adviser at the New Zealand Ministry of Economic Development and acted as Private Secretary to the New Zealand Minister of Commerce.
Director of Advocacy
Louise is Director of Advocacy at the ABI and is responsible for its member relations, communications and public affairs work. Louise has over 20 years’ experience as a leading campaigner and advocate specialising in regulated sectors including financial services and energy markets. She joined the ABI in 2012 as Head of Strategy and before that was Head of Advocacy at Which? lobbying in the UK, EU and internationally. Louise has contributed her expertise as a Trustee and Director to numerous charities and organisations.
