Clark Woodward Hungate & Co is now one of the largest independent firms of its type that specialises in surveys and investigations for and on behalf of Insurers that underwrite Marine Cargo, Freight Forwarders and Transit Liability. It is also retained by many private companies involved in the world of shipping and commerce. Since its formation in 1978 the company has maintained a controlled expansion programme and now has four operational and one administrative office in the United Kingdom as well as an associate company, CWH (Europe) SARL based in Lille Metropole, France. Supporting the above offices, Clark Woodward Hungate & Co have agents employing experienced personnel throughout Europe and the world. The company’s principals include virtually all major UK and foreign insurance companies, Lloyds Underwriters and Underwriting Agents that provide Marine Cargo, Freight Forwarders and Transit Liability Cover. It is also employed by such insurers to undertake pre-shipment and security surveys as well as risk management investigations. It has built much of its reputation on its ability to deal with cases at short notice and in general terms, most major areas of the UK including Northern Ireland and Eire are visited on a weekly basis. Clark Woodward Hungate & Co is a corporate member of the British Association of Cargo Surveyors and is approved to British Standard ISO 9001:2000. Its aim is to provide professional and efficient service for its principals and to this end it has invested heavily in computer hardware and software and has a highly organised back-up team to support its surveyors and adjusters, all of whom are contactable on a 24/7 basis. In addition, they have achieved Financial Services Authorities accreditation.
The senior managing partner with nearly 40 years experience in undertaking surveys and investigations upon all forms of dry cargo, temperature controlled goods and containers/equipment. In particular, he specialises in timber, sheet materials and forest products having originally studied Wood Science at High Wycombe College of Technology and over the years has travelled extensively in this field, both in dealing with claims and risk management. He is also called upon as an expert witness. In addition to the above, Bob is heavily involved with the handling of goods in transit, freight forwarders and warehousekeepers liability claims. Bob is a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters and has been a member of the committee of The British Association of Cargo Surveyors for the past 10 years and was involved with the updating of the current Lloyds Survey Handbook.
Brian is the senior partner in charge of the company’s Knutsford – Greater Manchester office which he opened when he joined Clark Woodward Hungate & Co in 1986. He has built a substantial reputation for detailed investigation into goods in transit, freight forwarders and warehousekeepers liability claims and is highly regarded throughout the market. Brian also has considerable experience in undertaking surveys on all forms of dry cargo, temperature controlled goods and equipment, as well as risk management experience.
Although Eirian’s background was originally in freight forwarding, he started loss adjusting in 1986 and joined Clark Woodward Hungate and Co in 1990. He was made a partner in 1998 and is based in the Knutsford office. Eirian has considerable experience in the handling of goods in transit freight forwarders and warehousekeepers liability claims. In addition, he is concerned with all forms of dry cargo and temperature controlled surveys and investigations as well as those relating to equipment. A considerable amount of his time is spent in Northern Ireland and Eire.
John joined Clark Woodward Hungate and Co in 1979 and was made an equity partner in 1991. Although originally based in Chislehurst, he set up the company’s Dover Office in 1996 in order to utilise the advantages brought about by the Channel Tunnel in dealing with claims involving near continent RO/RO ports such as Calais, Dunkerque, Zeebrugge and Rotterdam. As the result of the success of this venture he moved to Lille, North East France in 2002 and now runs CWH (Europe) SARL whose work extends throughout the majority of Western Europe, but still has responsibility for the operation of the Dover office. John has considerable experience in undertaking surveys on all forms of dry cargo, temperature controlled goods and equipment. He is a member of The British Association of Cargo Surveyors.
Nigel joined Clark Woodward Hungate and Co in November 2004 and is now the Partner in charge of the company’s Ipswich office. He was previously with another firm of loss adjusters for 14 years and has considerable experience in the handling of goods in transit, freight forwarders and warehousekeepers liability claims. Since joining the company he has traveled extensively throughout the UK and Western Europe in connection with liability and removers claims. He also has experience of marine cargo surveys and investigations and has undertaken pre-shipment and risk assessment surveys.
Cargo Surveyor & Compliance Officer
Rod joined the company in 1979, shortly after its formation, and has extensive experience in nearly all aspects of dry cargo surveying and loss adjusting. His particular expertise is in the field of temperature controlled cargoes and over the years has undertaken loading surveys on vessels carrying frozen fish, meat and meat products. He has played a major part in the setting up and day-to-day running of accounts involving some of the UK and Europe’s largest transport and distribution organisations. Rod is also the company’s Compliance Officer for ISO and a member of The British Association of Cargo Surveyors.

A founder and Senior Partner who also has nearly 40 years of experience in carrying out all forms of dry cargo, temperature controlled goods and equipment surveys. He has travelled extensively over the years and is well known for work associated with air freight loss investigations. Trevor is a Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters and a member of The British Association of Cargo Surveyors.
